SalvAide Programa de Comunidades Gemelas
"We don't want to be forever dependent on aid from others;
we
really want to be strong and self-sufficient. That is our dream!"
- A member of a twin community in El Salvador

SalvAide's Twin Community Program links rural
communities in El Salvador with
a diversity of organizations in
Canadian cities and towns.
SalvAide fosters lasting people-to-people ties between Canadian and Salvadorans with our Twin Community Program.
Currently 14 communities in Canada are twinned with rural communities in El Salvador.
Religious groups, municipalities, civic organizations, and trade unions are all part of the Twin Community Program and give each relationship its own distinctive character and perspective. These groups, though different in their approach and mandate, work independently towards a common goal: to foster bonds of friendship between the people of El Salvador and Canada while promoting international understanding and solidarity.

Principles of the Twin Community Program
- Mutuality
Twin Community relationships build close, direct ties between the people of El Salvador and Canada. This relationship is mutually beneficial; both parties share of themselves, help each other and learn from each other.
- Solidarity
We pledge to change the model of domination that has existed in the western hemisphere since the arrival of Columbus more than 500 years ago. We endeavour to create a new model of relations among the peoples of the world, in which justice, peace, self-determination and solidarity prevail.
- Justice
We work to ensure social justice in our countries, and guarantee that it be available to all and without discrimination.
- Strengthening the Role of Women
We believe it is necessary and urgent to increase women's leadership development and participation at all levels: local, national and international.
- Democracy
We support the efforts being made by the people of our own countries and many other nations to create openings for true participatory democracy, which should be the foundation of all relationships in society.
- Locally-Based Development
In our diverse communities, we carry out and support initiatives leading to the creation of alternative models of development based on self-management and self- sufficiency in the political, social and economic spheres of life.
- Caring for the Environment
We consider it a priority to protect and restore the environment, which is the source and sustenance of all life. This means that we seek profound changes, not only in society at large, but also in our own lives and work.
- Community Involvement
Twin Community relationships are rooted in the community and in grassroots efforts. We seek the recognition and support from local and national governments but do not depend on them. We strive to involve the community profoundly in the relationship.
