PUBLIC FORUM WITH GUEST SPEAKERS & DOCUMENTARY SCREENING:

MANUEL PÉREZ ROCHA, IPS Washington DC - Associate Fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington D.C. where he coordinates the project Networking for Justice in Global Investment. He is also a member of the Mexican Action Network on Free Trade (RMALC). Manuel will address the effects of free trade agreements in reference to foreign investors’ rights, citing the Pac Rim Cayman LLC v The Republic of El Salvador case currently being heard before the World Bank’s International Claims and Investment Disputes Tribunal.

JENNIFER MOORE, MINING WATCH, Ottawa – Latin America Program Coordinator at Mining Watch where she supports communities, organizations, and networks struggling with mining issues throughout Latin America. Jennifer is a freelance print and broadcast journalist with twelve years’ experience in social justice journalism, a third of which she has gained while living and working in Ecuador. While in South America from 2006 to 2010, she researched and wrote popular and academic articles about the struggles of indigenous and non-indigenous communities affected by Canadian-financed mining companies. She is also founder of the Canadian Allies Network in support of Salvadoran civil society’s National Roundtable on Mining in El Salvador.

“DEW DROPS THAT GO TO THE SEA: A VIDEO MANUAL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RESISTANCE:” In 2011, youth working for the Association for Economic and Social Development of Santa Marta (ADES) in El Salvador produced this film documenting efforts by Cabañas civil society organizations to prevent mining. The youth’s goal was to share the region’s lessons-learned with other communities struggling to protect their environment.
