San Salvador, 10 March 2014 – SalvAide congratulates the Salvadoran people and the country’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) for a transparent and festive Presidential run-off election with a likely record voter turn out. Our observers witnessed a well-run and calm electoral process and noticed important improvements to the first-round elections held just over one month ago.
At the polling centers in metropolitan San Salvador where we observed, accessibility was improved and the electronic transmission of results was more orderly. Salvadorans continue to make great strides in the consolidation of their democracy, thanks in large part to a highly professional and competent TSE.
With 100% of poll results processed, the Salvadoran Supreme Electoral Tribunal’s (TSE) preliminary results have the FMLN winning the election with 50.11% of the vote and a margin of 6,634 votes.
The TSE will hold a press conference at 10AM local time to speak to these preliminary results.
It’s important to note that the opposition party ARENA’s leadership, including the presidential candidate, have made disturbing and irresponsible declarations, including rejecting the authority of the TSE to declare a winner and making references to military intervention to "uphold democracy". SalvAide strongly condemns these and any other actions by ARENA that attempt to discredit a fair and free electoral process.
SalvAide calls for El Salvador’s political actors to allow the TSE to carry out its functions without interference through a definitive scrutiny of the preliminary results. We also call on supporters of the long struggle for democracy in El Salvador to remain vigilant and to be ready to respond to any efforts to undermine the authority of the TSE and to usurp the will of the majority of Salvadorans.
