Saint Paul University (U of Ottawa) Delegation Returns from Successful Academic Experience in El Salvador

Students and faculty from Saint Paul University's graduate Peace and Conflict Studies Program spent 12-days in El Salvador immersed in the historical and contemporary struggles (and popular victories) of the country.

The group spent several days in the capital, San Salvador, meeting with social movement leaders and human rights defenders. Their stay in the capital also included two days of seminars with Salvadoran academics at the José Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA), where six Jesuit scholars and their two assistants were murdered by Salvadoran Army Special Forces during the 12-year popular insurrection.

The delegates then travelled to several of the regions where SalvAide's sister organizations, CRIPDES and CORDES, are present - Chalatenango, Suchitoto, Cinquera, Tecoluca, the Bajo Lempa - for on the ground exposure to communities working for greater social justice and sustainable economic development. Of course, the team also enjoyed some of El Salvador's natural beauty, visiting (among others) the Izalco volcano and the Joya de Cerén Mayan archeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
